The Economics of Biodiversity Loss in Agricultural Landscapes

چکیده

This paper offers a framework for analysing the economic drivers and effects of agrobiodiversity loss, focusing on in-situ conservation at both farm and landscape levels. We distinguish between the proximate and fundamental causes of biodiversity loss in terms of the decentralised (microeconomic) behaviour of farming households. Special attention is paid to the interplay between microeconomic decisions and the mesoeconomic factors (i.e., institutional and market conditions) that determine the effects of government policies. We interpret agricultural landscape changes as the product of explicit or implicit decentralised farm-level decisions to (dis)invest in biodiversity as a strategic asset that provides flows of ecological services onand off-farm. Several case studies are used to illustrate how ‘downstream’ or ‘forward’ effects feed back into agricultural production and stability (‘backward effect’). This framework can be used to assess the effectiveness of policies to address underprovision of agrobiodiversitysupported ecological services that are socially (locally and globally) welfare enhancing.

Agricultural Extensification and Biodiversity Loss in Ikom Cross River State, Nigeria

The study analyzed agricultural extensification and biodiversity loss in Cross River State, Nigeria. The study used primary data with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire to collect data from one hundred and ten respondents (110) through simple random sampling technique. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics as well as inferential statistics. The results revealed that ...

Ultimate drivers of native biodiversity change in agricultural systems

The ability to address land degradation and biodiversity loss while maintaining the production of plant and animal products is a key global challenge. Biodiversity decline as a result of vegetation clearance, cultivation, grazing, pesticide and herbicide application, and plantation establishment, amongst other factors, has been widely documented in agricultural ecosystems. In this paper we iden...

Assessing the impacts of agricultural intensification on biodiversity: a British perspective.

Agricultural intensification is best considered as the level of human appropriation of terrestrial net primary production. The global value is set to increase from 30%, increasing pressures on biodiversity. The pressures can be classified in terms of spatial scale, i.e. land cover, landscape management and crop management. Different lowland agricultural landscapes in Great Britain show differen...

Biodiversity in agricultural landscapes: saving natural capital without losing interest.

While species extinctions continue to be a matter of extreme concern, changes in biodiversity in the world’s agricultural landscapes have largely escaped attention. Implicitly, the world community has traded off biodiversity in these landscapes against the conservation of threatened endemics in protected areas. But biodiversity loss in agricultural landscapes also has an opportunity cost. It af...

Biodiversity conservation and agricultural sustainability: towards a new paradigm of 'ecoagriculture' landscapes.

The dominant late twentieth century model of land use segregated agricultural production from areas managed for biodiversity conservation. This module is no longer adequate in much of the world. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment confirmed that agriculture has dramatically increased its ecological footprint. Rural communities depend on key components of biodiversity and ecosystem services that...
